Freelancer Payment Protection
Stop chasing invoices. Stop working for free. GuardPe requires clients to fund the deal before you start. Your payment is released when you deliver and the client approves — handled via our regulated payment partner.
The freelancer payment problem in India
Freelancing in India is growing fast — over 15 million freelancers work across design, development, content, consulting, and services. But payment disputes are endemic.
The fundamental issue: freelancers always go first. You quote, discuss, start working, deliver — and then wait for payment. Clients have all the leverage after delivery. They have your work. You have nothing but a promise.
Asking for 100% upfront is awkward and often rejected. Accepting 0% upfront is risky. There has been no middle ground — until escrow.
The escrow solution:
The client pays into escrow before you start. You see the funds are committed and begin work confidently. On delivery, the client approves and you get paid. Neither party takes on all the risk — both are protected.
4 ways freelancers lose money
These patterns repeat across thousands of freelancer disputes in India every year:
Client disappears after receiving work
You delivered everything. Client goes silent. No payment, no response. Extremely common for first-time or single-project clients.
"I'll pay after review" — forever
Client keeps requesting revisions and extending deadlines indefinitely. Work gets used without payment ever coming.
Partial payment only
Client pays 50% upfront, then disputes the remainder after delivery. Freelancer has no leverage to recover the balance.
Chargeback fraud
Client pays via card or UPI, receives work, then files a dispute with the bank. Bank reverses the payment. Freelancer loses both the work and the money.
GuardPe escrow blocks all four. The money is committed before work starts. It cannot be reversed or withheld after delivery without a dispute process.
How GuardPe protects freelancer payments
Four simple steps to secure, approved payment:
- 1
Create a project deal
Describe the project scope, deliverables, and payment amount. Share the deal link with your client — no account required for them to view it.
- 2
Client funds the deal
Your client pays using UPI, cards, or net banking. Payment is processed by Cashfree Payments (RBI-licensed aggregator) via a nodal account — not to you yet.
- 3
Deliver your work
Complete the project and submit your delivery through GuardPe — upload files, share links, or document the handover. The client gets notified automatically.
- 4
Get paid immediately
When the client approves, payment reaches your verified bank account within minutes. If they ghost, the auto-release happens after 7 days.
What GuardPe protects you from
Non-payment
Client cannot take your work without releasing payment. Funds are locked in escrow from the start.
Endless delays
Auto-release after 7 days. Even if the client goes quiet, you get paid automatically.
Scope disputes
Both parties agree to deliverables upfront. Disputes are reviewed against the original deal terms.
Chargeback fraud
Escrow payments cannot be reversed by the buyer's bank after the deal is funded. No chargeback risk.
Escrow also protects your clients
When you pitch GuardPe to a client, frame it as protection for both sides — not just you:
- Clients can verify the project scope before funds are released
- Money is held by an RBI-licensed institution — not by the freelancer
- Clients get a full refund if work is not delivered as agreed
- Dispute resolution within 72 hours if there is a disagreement
- Complete audit trail of payments, deliveries, and approvals
Pro tip:
When a client hesitates at escrow, they are usually worried about losing control of their money. Reassure them: GuardPe never holds money for more than 7 days without resolution. If they are unhappy with the delivery, they can raise a dispute and get a refund.
Freelancer payment protection — common questions
How can freelancers protect their payments in India?
The most effective protection is escrow: require clients to deposit payment before you start work. The money is held by a regulated third party and released to you when the client confirms delivery. GuardPe does this for any freelance project — design, development, writing, consulting, and more.
What if a client refuses to pay after I deliver work?
If the client funded the deal through GuardPe, the money is already in escrow — they cannot withhold it without justification. If they refuse to approve without a valid reason, you can raise a dispute. GuardPe's team reviews the evidence (work files, conversations, agreement) and releases the payment if your case is valid.
Can I use GuardPe for milestone-based projects?
Yes. GuardPe supports milestone payments natively. You can structure a project as multiple milestones, each funded separately. The client funds the next milestone only after approving the previous one. This protects both parties and creates a clear, auditable work trail.
Is there a minimum amount for freelancer escrow?
GuardPe works for any amount, but the minimum platform fee is ₹99 plus GST. This makes it practical for projects above ₹2,000. For smaller amounts, the percentage-based fee (5% for under ₹10,000) keeps it proportionate.
What counts as proof of delivery for a freelance project?
You can submit file links (Google Drive, Dropbox), screenshots, GitHub repository URLs, or any documented handover. GuardPe stores all submitted evidence. If a dispute arises, the review team examines both the submitted files and the original project agreement.
How long does the client have to approve my work?
The client has 7 days to review and approve your delivery. If they do not respond within 7 days, the payment is automatically released to your bank account. This prevents clients from silently ghosting after receiving work.
